Exchange rate worries will not stop Spain retaining its status as the favourite destination for UK holidaymakers this year, it has been claimed.

Travel expert Simon Calder said that Spain will remain the "absolute favourite country" for vacationing Britons in 2009, despite the pound falling in value against the euro.

With holidays in Spain and other eurozone countries becoming more expensive, some industry commentators have claimed that people will abandon established destinations and travel further afield to find bargains.

However, Mr Calder claimed that the sluggish pound "doesn't mean we are going to turn our back" on Spain.

He also claimed that many of the country's top resorts still offer "fantastic value for money" and predicted that there will be "some very good deals" on Spanish holidays this summer.

A recent article in the Sunday Times stated that many overseas property investors will return to "familiar favourites" such as Spain and France this year.
